May 9, 2008–Helio’s Mysto is an ultra-thin slider featuring a large, reflective mirror-like screen, a svelte, sapphire blue body and electrostatic keys that make the device shiver when pressed. Mysto also debuts two new Helio GPS search services, WHERE and Tellme, adding to Helio’s burgeoning portfolio of GPS-enabled services that started with the industry-first launch of GPS-enabled Google Maps for mobile and GPS-tagging of photos and videos, plus real-time Garmin turn-by-turn Navigation. Combined with nationwide 3G access and Helio’s acclaimed user interface and suite of communications services, Mysto is an ultimate mix of good looks and intelligence.

Mysto is manufactured exclusively for Helio for the U.S. market by Samsung. Customized with Helio's UI and line-up of services, Mysto is based on the hugely successful overseas U600 model, which has enjoyed sales in the millions in the short time since release in Europe and Korea. “Mysto is a startling combination of beauty and brains,” said Sky Dayton, CEO of Helio. “We packed our best communications services and some amazing new GPS features into one of the thinnest sliders available. Mysto feels like a finely tuned machine in your hand.”

Beautiful Genius
Mysto combines exquisite design and sophisticated technology to meet Helio members’ needs. Smooth to the touch, thin and sexy, Mysto boasts a 2 megapixel camera with 4x digital zoom, night mode and built-in Photo Studio for high quality photos and video, a large mirror-like 2.2 inch QVGA display, 100MB of available internal memory expandable via microSD to 4GB, an HTML browser, stereo Bluetooth and support for an array of audio and video formats including MP3 and AAC audio, and MPEG-4 and H.264 video.

Mysto also has external electrostatic keys that vibrate with “haptic feedback” with the tap of a finger, giving users the look of touch sensitive controls and the tactile sensation they want while using one-click search to jump onto the Web from the device idle screen, navigating through Helio’s ultimate inbox messaging hub made famous on Ocean, or playing a favorite song or video downloaded from Helio Player.

Lose Your Lost
With the introduction of WHERE and Tellme, Mysto expands on Helio’s line-up of GPS-enabled services that already include geo-tagged images and videos uploaded to Flickr and YouTube, Buddy Beacon, Google Maps for mobile and Garmin Mobile. Tellme, a subsidiary of Microsoft and the first one-touch voice search application for mobile in the U.S., lets users simply press one button and say a word to receive local search results, no need to know your location or spend time typing, just say what you want and get it. Tellme returns local listings containing phone numbers, maps, turn-by-turn directions and the ability to SMS the listing to friends. Now, Helio members don’t have to worry about saving restaurants, theaters or other business listings in their address books and finding a late night snack is a snap.

WHERE, a service of uLocate Communications, a GPS widget platform worldwide that gives users access to a library of location-enabled applications. WHERE provides information on things like local weather and events based on the user’s current location. WHERE is accessible on Mysto through its location-aware mobile browser and is a free service for Helio members.

Availability and Pricing
Mysto is now available at Helio retail locations, www.helio.com, by calling 888-88-HELIO and at thousands of retail locations nationwide for $149. Tellme is available on Mysto for $2.99 per month. WHERE is free of charge to All In Members; data charges apply for A La Carte Members.

Orb First to Enable Live TV on iPhone

May 9 /PRNewswire/ -- With another demonstration of the power and flexibility of the Orb architecture, Orb Networks (www.orb.com), just announced the world's first way to stream live TV to the iPhone and iPod touch. For the first time, iPhone users can enjoy the immediacy of live sporting events and fast-breaking news on their phone.

"TV on the iPhone is now real," said Joe Costello, CEO of Orb Networks. "Steve Jobs may think that buying shows from iTunes is the same as watching TV, but iPhone users know better. When the NBA playoffs are on, you want to see the game, live, wherever you are. Free."

Orb was the first company to enable the live streaming of TV from users' homes to almost any mobile phone with a streaming player and a web browser. To get around the iPhone's extreme limitations on supported video formats, Orb created a special application, OrbLive, to enable the streaming of any video format to iPhones.

"Although the iPhone provides users with a great way to experience the web, it offers a ridiculously sub-par streaming video experience. When all the carriers' free phones can stream lots of things that my iPhone can't, something's seriously wrong. OrbLive finally brings the iPhone's streaming video experience up to par with other mobile phones," said Costello.

Considering Travel to Curacao? Airfares to Curaçao Drop Drastically
May 8, 2008 – Flights to Curaçao on Continental Airlines will be slashed to an incredibly low $378* roundtrip in June… just as Uncle Sam sends home anticipated tax rebate checks. The five-hour direct flight will save travelers to Curaçao over $100 per ticket and comes as millions begin to receive their stimulus checks from the federal government. Curaçao, with its Dutch influence and perfect Caribbean weather, offers Americans the unique chance to experience European culture in an island environment and the US dollar stretches further on Curaçao, trading at $1 US for 1.77 Netherlands Antillean Guilders (the local currency).

In addition, visitors looking to spend a week on the island are invited to visit www.Curacaosave.com to receive an instant $140 credit to spend on dining and other activities on the grounds of their preferred resort or hotel. In light of recent downturn in the US economy, 5 hotels in Curaçao are giving a Book Now credit bonus to guests when they book a 7-night stay before August 17.

With its pristine diving locations, secluded beaches, championship golf course, and amazing world-class fishing, Curaçao offers a little something for everyone – from the adventure traveler to those who simply want to unwind and enjoy its perfect climate. Curaçao boasts an eclectic mix of history and culture, which welcomes people to this special island paradise.

Easy daily arrivals into Curaçao are also available on American Airlines connecting through Miami. Delta also offers weekly service, connecting more than 40 cities to Curaçao through Atlanta. For more information about Curaçao and to receive a free destination DVD, call 1-800-3-CURACAO (1-800-328-7222), or visit www.Curacao.com.

Klipsch Palladium P-39F Speaker Takes Environmentally Friendly Approach

May 8, 2008 — When the Klipsch industrial design team set out to create the flagship Palladium P-39F floorstanding loudspeaker, their goal was to have it resemble a premium piece of handcrafted furniture. And, by looking at its striking boat-tail silhouette and exotic zebra-striped finish, it's quite obvious they hit the mark. But, less apparent is the team's environmentally friendly approach.

According to Paul Jacobs, president and COO of Klipsch Group, Inc., often, when building luxury goods, manufacturers will use a zebrawood veneer because their affluent target market is awed by its dramatic color banding of light and dark stripes. However, it's a resource that is considered threatened in its native habitat, meaning it's vulnerable to extinction in the near future. "With the P-39F, we too are trying to reach upper-echelon customers using a distinct, zebra-striped veneer, but we've found a way to lessen the impact it has on our mother Earth," he said.

The Palladium P-39F features what the company calls a "Linia" veneer, which is available in three different finish stains: natural, merlot and espresso. According to Glen Fuller, Klipsch director of design, Linia is a very close match to zebrawood. It is a hand-selected zebra-grain veneer produced from real wood; tree sources include the Ayous, Obeche and Italian Poplar. These trees are part of a government-sanctioned controlled harvest, so they are a renewable wood resource. "By using the Linia zebra-grain veneer, we're proving that the essence of nature can still be enjoyed without harming the environment," noted Fuller.

There are several other advantages that Linia has over zebrawood. Five times as much zebrawood needs to be used to find an acceptable product finish, resulting in an incredible amount of waste material. Worse yet, it is wasting a natural resource that is not easily renewable. The non-threatened Linia is a more eco-friendly choice, in that its repeatable pattern/grain is consistent and offers graphic uniformity, leaving hardly any waste material behind. Fuller also mentioned that Linia's stain and color consistency from model-to-model is good for manufacturing and matching models from run-to-run and year-to-year.

"Because we want to be an environmentally responsible company, while still setting the highest production standards, we decided to go with a zebra-grain Linia version rather than a zebrawood veneer on the P-39F," said Jacobs.

Palladium P-39F speakers will begin shipping to select U.S. specialty retailers this summer. More information on this luxury product can be found at www.klipsch.com/palladium.

Canton's Karat Line Offers a Perfect Balance of Sound & Style

May 8, 2008 – Canton, Germany's best selling loudspeaker brand, has reenergized its high-end Karat family of music and home theater loudspeakers with six new speakers to replace discontinued models. The new models incorporate upgraded drivers and crossovers, subtly refined cabinet aesthetics, and new high-gloss finish options.

"The Karat is a modern blending of performance and style," said Paul Madsen, president of Canton USA. "Designed with the same attention to performance as our other high-end lines, these are the perfect speakers for bold, modern décors. The narrow front baffle and deep side panels allow for the use of a large woofer for deep bass performance while maintaining precise imaging in the upper registers to minimize diffraction effects. In keeping with Canton's evolutionary approach to design, where each generation builds on the last, this new lineup incorporates a number of subtle refinements for improved performance, but still maintains the essential sonic and aesthetic character that has made the Karat series one of our most popular lines."

While the new models are built on the same basic platforms as their predecessors, Canton's engineers have incorporated subtle but significant improvements to the transducers, crossovers, and internal cabinet details. Most significant among these is a refinement in the integration between the tweeter and midrange drivers accomplished through improvements in the aluminum diaphragm, soft rubber surround, and associated crossover circuits of the midrange drivers used throughout the line. The result is improved dispersion characteristics and lower distortion levels. Additionally, the midrange drivers benefit from new basket materials and geometry that results in reduced compression effects due to airflow restrictions for improved cooling and power handling capabilities.

The new Karat lineup consists of three tall and slender 3-1/2-way floor-standing loudspeakers with large side-mounted woofers, a three-way pedestal or bookshelf speaker with side woofer, a two-way bookshelf speaker, and a 2-1/2-way center channel speaker. The new Canton Karat 795 DC, 790 DC, 770 DC, 755 DC, 730 DC and 720 replace, respectively, the previous Karat 711 DC, 709 DC, 707 DC, 705 DC, 703 DC and 702 models. The Karat AS 750 SC subwoofer with its 350 W IcePower amplifier remains in the line. The three Karat floor-standing models each benefit from a sophisticated 3-1/2-way crossover network, where both midrange drivers operate below 400 Hz, but only the upper driver also reproduces the upper midrange frequencies. This allows for substantial improvement in mid-bass performance without introducing the adverse interactions that occur when multiple drivers are used in the upper midrange registers.

The technical prowess of the Karat begins with its Canton-designed and manufactured drivers. All of the line's full-range models employ a custom-tailored version of the company's lauded 1-inch aluminum-manganese tweeter, which delivers extraordinary precision and dispersion characteristics while avoiding the harsh characteristics that plague many lesser-developed metal domes. The unique dome/voice coil former are made from a single piece, providing an extremely efficient heat sink for high-excursion modes, and the subtly flared transmission baffle improves the off-axis response that is vital to real-world listening environments.

All of the midrange and bass drivers in the Karat family have Canton's exclusive Wave Surrounds, which employ a sinusoidal profile rather than conventional rounded surrounds. This provides substantial improvements in excursion and linearity for improved power handling and reduced distortion. The Karat line's midrange drivers are all constructed of aluminum for extreme rigidity and light weight, making the speakers extremely responsive to midrange and mid-bass transients.
The Karat AS750 SC powered subwoofer also features an aluminum cone, the largest the company manufactures at 12-inches. The bass cones used in the large floor-standing models are constructed of sturdy Cellulose Graphite, and provide authoritative deep bass response precisely tuned to each cabinet's internal volume. For the compact three-way Karat 730 DC, the side-mounted bass driver is constructed of lightweight polypropylene to allow for the increased demands of the smaller cabinet. The Karat line enclosures are constructed from extensively braced and damped low-resonance MDF, and feature stylishly slim front baffles, thanks in part to the side-mounted woofers used in the three-way models. This design maintains extremely responsive and linear bass performance, while improving focus and imaging in the midrange and tweeter bands thanks to the reduction in adverse baffle interactions.

Canton pays special attention to its crossover design and incorporates it's exclusive DC (Displacement Control) Technology where appropriate. This prevents uncontrolled movement of the woofer cone at very low frequencies to provide cleaner, more well defined bass with lower distortion. All models are currently available in graphite or silver lacquer finish, and select models in an optional high-gloss white- or black lacquer at a 15% surcharge.

All models have black grilles. Prices range from $2,400 per speaker for the top-of-the-line Karat 795 DC, to $600 each for the two-way Karat 720.

Now Hear This: Sifting Through Home Theater Sound Systems

You've got your new large-screen HDTV set up, and you have plenty of your favorite DVDs waiting to be viewed. Now all you need is the right sound. When you sit down to watch a movie -- or live music concert -- in your own home theater, you want to feel as though you're in a real movie theater. The audio is just as important as the picture quality, which means you should take great care in shopping for the right receiver and speaker pieces. As you shop for audio components for your home theater, first check out "HDTV – A beginner's guide." Then, consider the following points:

The AV receiver
Most average home theater users don’t need to buy separate tuners and amplifiers for the different channels. The easiest and perhaps most cost-effective way to get several pieces all in one package is to go with an audio/video receiver, which lets you plug in most, if not all, of the pieces in your system, including your television.

Because your surround sound receiver drives your speakers, it should offer at least 100 watts of power per channel. Your receiver should support all the surround sound and multiple channel audio formats you want to hear, such as Dolby Digital EX and Dolby Pro Logic IIx.

You will have your choice of systems with 5.1, 6.1 or 7.1 channels, but obviously the 7.1-channel system allows for more speakers, which typically means a better overall sound.

The speakers
For a high-quality room-filling sound, look for three-way speakers that include a woofer, tweeter and midrange. Most audio system dealers recommend systems with 7.1 channels, which means you’ll be placing two speakers in front, two on the sides, two in the rear and one underneath the television, along with a subwoofer in a corner.

Speakers come in all kinds of sizes, and while some systems can get a decent sound out of a small speaker, generally the bigger tower speakers provide more range and better sound. If you intend to use the speakers for movie viewing as well as for listening to CDs or watching live concerts on DVD, it may be worth your while to spend more on larger-sized speakers.

For the best sound, consider placing the speakers at about four or five feet off the ground, near ear level. However, if you’re planning to use the home theater room for a lot of non-movie entertaining, you may want to place the speakers lower so the music you play during parties doesn’t compete with your guests’ conversations. In some of the more expensive speakers, the tweeter can be moved in different directions depending on where the listener wants the sound to go.

If having so many speakers around the room seems a bit much, you can have them installed behind the walls – or you can choose to keep the speakers out but hide the wires inside the walls.

The subwoofer
The subwoofer is the speaker that carries the lowest frequencies, those deep bass sounds that almost seem to shake the room and grab hold of you when you’re watching a movie.

Subwoofers may be sold along with other speakers, they may be bought separately or they may even be built into the same tower as the conventional speaker – which means you would have one less box you would need to add to the room. However, when a subwoofer is included inside another speaker, it is often so small that it can’t produce the deep bass sounds you may want.

Home theater-in-a-box systems
If you're having trouble deciding which pieces to choose, check out this advanced home theater checklist. If the cost is skyrocketing as you add up the prices of each component, you might consider buying a home theater in a box system, which packages together most -- and sometimes all -- of the components you need, including a receiver, speakers, DVD and CD player. Sometimes these packages even include DVD and VCR combination players or DVD recorders.

While a salesperson will likely tell you that these box systems don't compare in sound to a system made up of components sold separately, many are pleased with the sound they get from home theater-in-a-box systems.

Many of these systems are reasonably priced --some as low as a few hundred dollars – plus the components tend to run smaller, and installation is often easier.

Test the sound
The best way to test the sound of home theater components you're considering is to listen to your favorite CD or DVD through the system. So when you shop around, bring your own disk from home and don’t be shy about asking a salesperson to slip it in.
